Where to turn?

16373923_s“Be strong and courageous, for you are the one who will lead these people to possess all the land I swore to their ancestors I would give them. Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do. Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do. This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:6-9)

Today, we just grab our smartphones and punch in coordinates to help us navigate to where we need to go and to tell us when to where to turn.

“After 400 feet, turn right” our phone says promptly to remind us.

After Moses death, the Lord told Joshua that he would be the one to lead the Israelites across the Jordan river and into the land he was giving them. God was fulfilling a promise that He had made to Abraham and repeated to Moses. In His speech, God didn’t promise Joshua armies of soldiers to protect them from resistance and battle. He didn’t promise them a journey free of troubles and hardships that may cause frustration and discouragement along their trek. He didn’t speak of the details of the journey.

He just promised them deliverance…

and He gave instruction.

To be strong.

Be very courageous.

Obey all instruction.

Study this Book of Instruction.

Each of the instructions seem almost simplistic within themselves yet challenging because they don’t tell us how to do each one specifically but our God delivers what He promises. He will give us the strength that we need and the courage that can dwell up inside us in ways we are not capable of creating. Today, we have a Book of Instruction that has so much more guidance for our lives than what Joshua had when he was commanded to go.

God will deliver us and He will fulfill the promises He has made to us but He needs us not to deviate. As we reach for our phones for directions in life, God tells us to not turn. To stay on a straight course. To know that He is with us wherever we go and that when we follow His directions we will reach our destination.

I pray today that I will seek constant meditation from the Book of instruction and be reminded that God is with me wherever I go. That He is my navigation system to depend on that He does fulfill His promises.
