Something happened this week that changed our household. We got a puppy. Not just any puppy. One named Duke that in a short time stole our hearts; all 3 pounds of him. We have had dogs before but this time something resonated with me more because maybe I am at a different place spiritually since I last owned a canine friend. Even in a short time, I believe that he has changed the spirit in our home and he has touched hearts. He doesn’t know what he is doing but with each wag of his tail and with each lick on our face he radiates unconditional love. The same unconditional love that our Heavenly Father extends to us. The same love that is there for us no matter what our sin has been or no matter if we fail.
So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. – 1 John 4:16
This is the same with our furry four-legged friends. We believe in the love they have for us because it is undeniable and the more we abide, the more they love. God guarantees the same thing for us His children and He asks us to give the same love to our spouse, family, and friends. So if we see others through puppy eyes do we see a person that we are excited to see and with all our energy want to place ourself at their side making sure they feel loved? Do we see a person where sin and past mistakes have been forgotten and from this precise moment make every opportunity to walk with them in love and bond relentlessly.
Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. – 1 Peter 4:8
Unconditional love is difficult for many of us because our flesh fights against the loving that way. We want to hold onto unmet expectations and hurts that others have caused us. God formed a creature that if we stop and take a moment and look into their eyes we will see the look of love that God expresses. We will see how God gazes upon us.
