Take the Next Exit

eternal lifeI was having a discussion with a co-worker today that was centered around  our age and, of course, how many years we have left on this earth. We often think of retirement, envision what our physical health and well-being will be like, and most likely hope that we don’t leave this life too early for the sake of our family.

Another conversation happened earlier in the week with my two teenage daughters. Not about death but about God and their curiosity and reservations to follow Jesus. I pray that they will surrender their life to Him one day soon but that will be their choice as He continues to work on their hearts. Imagine being that young again. Not a care in the world and so many years ahead to enjoy life.

The two conversations have very little in common on the surface but the timeline of our life is greatly important. We will never have control on when that day will come. We hope not for a long time but it could be this afternoon. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe not for many more years to come. Regardless, we often get so caught up in our worldly thoughts on our  life here on earth that we don’t think of eternal life. Have we even made the effort to position ourselves for a place in heaven? Pursuing Jesus and a life honoring to God is not something to put on your task list to check off when you get some more free time. Or maybe get around to it when we stop living for ourselves. We got time, right?

Don’t take the next minute, hour, or day for granite. Invest in your opportunity for eternal life today. Accept Jesus in your life and believe in Him. Honor Him. Live for Him.

For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16
